LAHORE: Transgender persons will now been given permission to get their identity cards made and the right to vote as the Lahore High Court (LHC) allowed them to use their guardian’s name instead of father’s on forms while hearing a petition on Tuesday.
LHC Justice Abid Aziz Sheikh announced the verdict while hearing a petition filed by Mian Asiya, a transgender person residing in Narowal.
According to details present in Asiya’s petition, she could not get her identitification card made because of National Database and Registration Authority’s (NADRA) compulsion for the provision of the parent’s or the father’s details.
Asiya in the petition had stated that she wants to put her guardian’s (guru) name instead of her father’s name, hence NADRA presented her case in the provincial court along with her identity card and the guru’s details as well.
LHC while announcing its verdict, stated that transgender person shall be allowed to put their guru’s details in the aforementioned forms, this decision comes as a welcoming message to the transgender community, who are already excited over getting the right to vote.
