LAHORE: Jamat-e-Islami (JI) Chief Siraj-ul-Haq on Monday said that his party would sit in opposition in the National Assembly, deciding against Fazlur Rehman’s suggestion to boycott taking oath.
JI is the part of Muttahida Majlis-e-Amal (MMA), a political alliance of religious parties, that had rejected the elections’ results.
Addressing a press conference here Siraj said JI would sit in the opposition ‘with complete dignity and play its part’.
Accusing state institutions of meddling in the polls, Siraj said all efforts were made to remove the national political leadership from the scenario.
The JI chief said despite serious reservations, he is ready to give a chance to the new government to prove itself.
On July 27, the All Parties Conference (APC) — hosted by Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) and MMA — had rejected the results of the July 25 elections. MMA Chief Fazlur Rehman had also said he would boycott taking oath in parliament.
Howover, PML-N and PPP did not accept Fazlur Rehman’s suggesstion and decided to form a strong opposition in the National Assembly.
