ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court on Wednesday extended the deadline to complete the corruption cases against former premier Nawaz Sharif and his family until 9th June.
Previously, a request was made by the Accountability Court to extend the deadline to complete the corruption cases.
As the hearing started, Justice Ijazul Ahsan, who is the monitoring judge of the corruption case, asked why the trial has not concluded yet.
The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) prosecutor replied that the trial in one reference has concluded.
Justice Ahsan then asked if arguments in the corruption case have been concluded and whether its verdict can be given separately.
Justice Azmat Saeed Sheikh, who was presiding the two-member bench, asked Nawaz’s council Khawaja Harris how much time the defence counsel required, to which he replied that he needed three months.
Harris argued that the holy month of Ramazan was just around the corner and a one month extension would not be enough.
Later, the court extended the deadline for one month.
Justice Azmat said that they were not going anywhere and the counsel could come to them if the trial did not conclude by then.
The court will not let justice be murdered, he added.
Justice Ahsan stated that the rights of the accused would be safeguarded at all costs.
Former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and his family are facing three corruption cases in the accountability court after the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) filed references against them on the basis of the Supreme Court’s verdict in the Panama Papers case last year.
